Millions of family farmers are feeding ASEAN – their role should be better recognised and their rights more efficiently protected through stronger farmers’ organisations. Improving the professionalisation and then food security of small farmers and rural producers in Southeast Asia is the exact focus of the EU-funded ASEAN Farmers’ Organisations’ Support Programme (AFOSP). The meeting in June brought together representatives of regional and national farmers’ organisations and key partners who contribute to the 5-year Medium Term Cooperation Programme which is one of the two components of AFOSP. They reflected on the challenges and gains of the programme, in order to better reach its core objective – strengthening the capacity of farmers and their organisations.
