Co-organised with the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the seminar on the EU support to Geographical Indications (GIs) was opened by the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Phil Hogan. Over 150 participants came to learn about the GIs – the places, names or words used to identify products that come from specific geographical areas, which have special quality, characteristics and reputation that are directly linked to their origin, due to natural factors as well as traditional production practices. Related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), the EU supports GIs in the ASEAN region through the ECAP III project and the EU South-East Asia IPR SME Helpdesk.
