For the first time, the European Union attended the East Asia Summit (EAS). As guest of the Chair, President of the European Council Donald Tusk represented the EU at the Summit lunch. President Tusk highlighted the role of the EU as a reliable and trustworthy partner of Asia including in security-related issues.
The East Asia Summit is the most important forum for strategic debates and cooperation in the Asia Pacific. The members of the EAS are the ten ASEAN countries, plus US, China, Russia, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia and New Zealand – but not the EU.
