The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/ Vice-President of the European Commission, H.E. Ms Federica Mogherini, met with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Mr Le Luong Minh, and the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) at the ASEAN Secretariat on Saturday, 9 April 2016. Both, the Secretary-General Minh, as well as the CPR, welcomed the HRVP Mogherini as a representative of one of the most important partners of ASEAN, and expressed their appreciation of the relationship that has evolved over the past 39 years and continues to deepen.
With the 40th anniversary of the EU-ASEAN Dialogue Relations in 2017 in mind, the partners recognised an invaluable opportunity to bring more visibility to the scaling up of the relation and to move forward by exploring new areas of cooperation. Both sides recognised the importance of EU as the largest Foreign Direct Investment provider to the region and as the second largest trading partner of ASEAN. As natural partners in regional integration, the HRVP highlighted the need to cooperate more in political and security field, including by jointly addressing global issues of mutual concern.
