Indonesia is the first country to start Forest Law Enforement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licencing for legal timber exports to the EU. As a result of a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA), FLEGT licensing scheme is the first of its kind in the world, expected to increase trade in legal timber products. In ASEAN, VPAs are being negotiated with Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. On 6-8 December, the European Forest Institute (EFI) also held an ASEAN workshop on Timber Legality in Jakarta. For more information, please see the press release and FLEGT website.
