The inaugural High-Level ASEAN-EU Dialogue on Sustainable Development: Towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals was co-chaired by Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development and Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, as ASEAN coordinator on Sustainable Development Cooperation and country coordinator for EU-ASEAN relations.

The overall objective was to provide political momentum for a more strategic EU-ASEAN engagement on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. The high-level opening segment of the Dialogue concluded with a short launching ceremony for new EU cooperation programmes with ASEAN, namely: the EU-ASEAN Dialogue facility (E-READI, EUR 20 million), the flagship programme on economic and trade connectivity (ARISE Plus, EUR 40 million) and the programme under the Spotlight Initiative for promoting women migrant workers’ rights and opportunities in ASEAN (‘Safe and Fair’, EUR 25 million). A gender side event was also organized with ILO and UN WOMEN who jointly implement this new female migrant worker programme for EUR 25 million. The Commissioner also presented the new edition of the Blue Book on EU-ASEAN Development Cooperation 2017. The co-Chairs’ Press Statement foresees the possibility to convene the next high-level ASEAN-EU Dialogue on Sustainable Development in 2019.
