As the partnership between the EU and ASEAN keeps on evolving, I am pleased to present you our third newsletter, bringing you a selection of highlights in our latest developments, vibrant discussions and cooperation activities in the region and beyond.
We had the pleasure to host the visit of the EU High Representative / Vice-President of the Commission, Federica Mogherini to Jakarta, where she met with the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the Committee of the Permanent Representatives to ASEAN at the ASEAN Secretariat on 9 April.
From the end of February to the end of April, we have been actively engaged in the work of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) on various topics from cyber-security and preventive diplomacy and mediation to maritime security and illegal fishing. On 21-22 March, the EU co-chaired, for the first time, one of the most important annual meetings under the ARF umbrella – the Inter-Sessional Meeting on Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime. Annual ASEAN Economic Ministers’ consultations with the EU Trade Commissioner on 3 March were an important milestone for both partners. Many significant steps have been taken towards strengthening the ASEAN Community Building, such as the establishment of a regional Risk Assessment Centre for Food Safety and two workshops that contribute to the development of the ASEAN Single Aviation Market.
I hope you will enjoy reading about these and many more achievements in our Newsletter.
In May, we will be looking forward to the ARF Senior Officials’ Meeting in Luang Prabang, the 3rd ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days 2016 in Hanoi, and the launch of the very first Blue Book on Development Cooperation between the EU and ASEAN.
