Concluding a busy year of EU-ASEAN activities, 40 years of relations between EU and ASEAN were celebrated at the highest level with President of the European Council Donald Tusk attending the Commemorative ASEAN-EU Summit in Manila on 14 November 2017. The same day, President Tusk was invited as Guest of the Chair to the East Asia Summit – a first for the EU. The same month, the first High-Level ASEAN-EU Dialogue on Sustainable Development was launched in Bangkok with Commissioner Mimica, focusing on our cooperation to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
Other important bilateral activities included the 4th EU-ASEAN High-Level Dialogue on Maritime Security Co-operation in early October, and the 2nd ASEAN-EU Policy Dialogue on Human Rights in late November.
On the economic front, an EU-ASEAN joint working group met for the first time in October to start discussions on the framework for a possible region-to-region Free Trade Agreement. Meanwhile, the European Aviation Safety Agency opened a regional office in Singapore; and the EU “Copernicus” Earth Observation programme was introduced to the ASEAN Secretariat. We also continued our numerous activities in the field of education through our SHARE programme.
Finally, the ASEAN-EU Youth Forum for Youth Engagement in Food Production and Value Chains was launched at the ASEAN Secretariat. I also would like to highlight that the “My Nature My Hero” video competition is extended until 25 March. At your cameras (or phones)!
Last but not least, as we are starting a new year, I would like to convey to all of you my best wishes of good health, happiness and prosperity for 2018.
