Dear Friends,

Happy 40th Anniversary of EU-ASEAN partnership!

I am happy to bring to you the first Newsletter of 2017, covering highlights of EU-ASEAN cooperation.

During the first trimester, we carried out activities across all pillars, such as held the successful second round of EU-ASEAN Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement (CATA) negotiations at the ASEAN Secretariat, hosted the ARF Workshop on Mainstreaming the Prevention of Violent Extremism in Brussels, and received high-level visitors to ASEAN, namely the Italian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Benedetto Della Vedova, EU Commissioner for Environment, Mr Karmenu Vella, and Member of the European Parliament, Mr Reinhard Bütikofer, and, widening the EU-ASEAN overall agenda.

We held the 24th ASEAN-EU Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting at the ASEAN Secretariat on 2 March, where we had the chance to review our cooperation and to formally launch the 40th Anniversary celebrations, with the announcement of two new programmes that will support the sustainable use of peatlands and haze mitigation and biodiversity conservation and management of protected areas in ASEAN.

In the coming months, we will, among other activities, look forward to the ASEAN Economic Ministers Consultation with the EU Trade Commissioner and the EU-ASEAN Business Summit in March in the Philippines, and the fourth edition of the EU-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Days in April in the Netherlands.

I hope you enjoy reading about these and many other highlights of our cooperation in our Newsletter.
